• Many text 542542 for answers to questions, but what really goes on behind the scenes.

ALL OVER THE COUONTRY -

BAY AREA-- You may have used it to find a movie time or settle a bet but millions around the country are getting their questions answered over text message.

It's a service that you text a question to 542542 and you'll receive an answer in about five minutes.

So if you ever wondered, who's answering my questions? Well, it's hundreds of people like Alicea Norman, an employee with Knowledge Generation Bureau.

"Most of our customers either are out and about, they don't have access to the Internet or they may not have a smart phone where they can look up the answer themselves," said Norman, who is able to work from home.

Questions come to agents on a split screen. An agent can click on the question they want to answer, then look through a KGB database or Google to answer the customer in 160 characters or less. Each answer earns the agent ten cents.

Most of it's kind of useless trivia but it's funny stuff that's like oh my gosh, I can't believe somebody asked this," she said. "And now you can go back to your friends and go you won't believe what I just learned!"

But there are some questions that are off limits.

"We won't tell someone how to kill a person, we won't tell someone where to hide a body, we won't do that," she said. "But for the most part, not much is off limits, as long as it's not blatantly racist hateful or illegal."

She said the busiest time for questions is at night and on the weekends. Each question costs .99 cents each. The agents try to get the answer to customers in under five minutes.

She said if an answer doesn't exist or is wrong, the company will look for what could be a similar answer, or credit or refund the customer.
